    ABOUT

Wagner Mello, RN, BSN, MS, L.Ac., is a Registered Nurse currently working in Critical Care – Interventional cardiology, vascular and neurovascular services at Lenox Hill Hospital, New York City, since 2004.

Nowadays, his job is very technical. He currently treat patients for their cardiac, vascular and neuro diseases inside protocols. Though he enjoys his work, he likes to practice a type of medicine that treats each patient as a unique individual.

He received his Nursing degree in Brazil at one of the most prestigious Nursing Schools - Anna Nery Nursing School, which belongs to the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, in 1994. Upon graduating from the program, he specialized in Critical Care in São Paulo, Brazil.

In 1996, he moved back to Rio de Janeiro and worked in Trauma Level I Emergency, Recovery Room for Cardiac Surgery and Home Care until 2003. In the same year he was invited to take a job at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, as a Registered Nurse, after a three day work related visit, which ultimately lead to his current employment.

Growing up in a Western culture did not give him the opportunity to be exposed to an Eastern one, which is specifically different in it’s alternative, holistic methods to treat disease. Since childhood, he was taught to believe that medications cure disease, instead of using alternative methods.

His first experience with alternative methods was after he finished nursing school in 1994. He worked as a volunteer health care provider for almost a year in the Amazon with the Brazilian Red Cross. While working with different tribes of natives from Brazil, he discovered the alternative methods they would use to treat such health problems as the common cold, body aches, open wounds and nutritional deficiencies. Though his knowledge as a Registered Nurse was beneficial in that environment, he learned invaluable alternative treatments as well.

His interest in alternative techniques grew when he came back to New York after visiting his mother in Brazil. He felt so helpless watching as his mother's health declined. She had been diagnosed with cancer, and medications could not help her and in the end she passed. Talking to his friend from Sao Paulo who had just finished his Master’s Program in Acupuncture, he realized how many options she could have had. If his mom had been receiving alternative treatment such as Acupuncture to help her with her pain, nausea and relaxation, he truly believes she could have had better results, or at the very least, have had a less painful death.

He came back to New York and decided to expand his career, combining Eastern and Western medicine. He found different schools that offered acupuncture as a masters program. He chose to transfer his credits from the Nurse Practitioner program at NYU to the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, one of the best acupuncture schools in the country.

It took some time, but he finished the hardest academic program of his career. He is excited because his immediate horizon brings fresh experiences and new challenges but he believes it can bring him back to his primary goal as a Registered Nurse — to treat a patient’s health in a holistic manners but this time, outside the hospital setting.

Nowadays, his job is very technical. He currently treat patients for their cardiac, vascular and neuro diseases inside protocols. Though he enjoys his work, he likes to practice a type of medicine that treats each patient as a unique individual.
